Casa Loma sits on the edge of the Davenport escarpment, the old shoreline of glacial Lake Iroquois that runs across midtown Toronto. The land's height is the reason a row of large houses was built along this ridge in the early twentieth century, and it is why Casa Loma still reads as a landmark when seen from the streets below.

An Edwardian house dressed as a castle

Casa Loma was built for financier Sir Henry Pellatt and completed in the 1910s. It was designed by architect E. J. Lennox, who is better known in Toronto for Old City Hall. The house borrows freely from European castle and country-house forms: crenellated towers, a great hall, conservatory glasswork and long service corridors. It is not a restoration of anything historical; it is an Edwardian-era interpretation of older styles, which is part of what makes it unusual.

Pellatt's ownership did not last. Rising costs and changing finances meant the family occupied the house for only a short period before it passed out of private hands. That short residency is common to several large Toronto houses of the same era.

The escarpment that gives Casa Loma its commanding position is the same geological feature that shapes nearby streets such as Davenport Road, which follows the base of the old shoreline.

The broader pattern of hilltop estates

Casa Loma is the most theatrical example, but it belonged to a wider pattern. Wealthy households in early-twentieth-century Toronto favoured elevated land north of the old city core. Several neighbourhoods retain large detached houses from this period, often in brick and stone with deep setbacks and mature trees.

Heritage status and visiting today

Casa Loma is operated as a historic house museum and event venue, with public access to the main rooms, towers and gardens during open hours. Because hours and ticketing change seasonally, it is best to confirm current details through the official City of Toronto or operator listings before visiting.
